Ramadan Night Markets
This is a mini-collection that consists of photos taken from Ramadan Night Markets in the Sydney suburb of Lakemda. This year, they took place between March 9th to April 8th every Thursday to Sunday nights between roughly the times of iftar, which is fast-breaking, and suhoor, which is the pre-fasting meal. It has been a hallmark event for Sydneysiders and the city in past few years as people of different backgrounds broke bread in these markets.
From what I could see, it’s not one of those pompous events with pretty stands and good-mannered servers. It’s beat-up, dirty, chaotic and mostly left to its own devices. Yet, it has something charming about it. Something that convinced people of all cultures to participate. In that sense, it’s a naturally sprung event. Quite an unusual thing for Sydney.
Therefore I believe it deserves to be photographed. Here is my take on it. I tried to capture the charm in its chaos.
